Bon Amis at Bloemendal

So, if you are as much of a sushi fan as we are, you should definitely pop round to Bon Amis at Bloemendal Wine Estate. If you also don't like to spend your entire salary on one (amazing) plate of sushi, you'd pop round on a Friday and enjoy selected sushi at half the price. The special runs from 15:00 until they close at 21:30, so you have a lot of time to fit in all of those Salmon Roses!

Speaking of Salmon Roses (R55 normal price), here are some below. They are made up of rice and avocado inside, salmon on the outside, and topped with mayo and caviar. They are very addictive!

I am also a huge fan of Seared Tuna Sashimi (R62 normal price). Although it doesn't fall under the selected sushi that is half price, I ordered it anyway because I can (see below). It is essentially just raw fish. I like the sear and the spice on it so I order it like this, but you can have normal salmon pieces too which cost the same. Also, don't expect to see such generous portions of fish at other sushi outlets - these are quite a bit bigger than usual, so you feel you are really getting value for your money.

If you haven't tried any of the deep-fried California Rolls, you are missing out! We had the Tuna Crunch (R75 normal price), which is your regular California Roll, but battered and deep-fried and topped with mayo and sweet-chilli sauce (see below). It is yum! (Totally a worth-while treat if you are watching your figure!) We also had the regular Salmon California Roll (R70 normal price) and the sprinkled chives on top make a nice addition (see below).

If you are not a sushi fan (you are missing out!), you can order something else off the à la carte menu. Their house specialties include: Didi's Chicken Pie (R80), with pumpkin fritters in a caramel sauce; or, Cook's Beer Battered Hake and Chips (R80), with homemade tatar sauce and grilled lemon (see below). They have a very varied menu, which includes burgers, pasta and pizza - the latter also has a banting option.

We normally order the Bloemendal Waterlily Sauvignon Blanc (R75), which has notes of guava, lemon zest and limes. The Durbanville Twelve Sauvignon Blanc (R75) is also a great choice as it is made up of grapes from each of the twelve wine farms in the Durbanville wine valley. This wine has notes of green apple, fig leaf and citrus.

They also have a cosy fireplace for those chilly, wintery days.
