I'd been dying to try a pizza and wine pairing for ages, and I'd heard that Brenaissance had a pretty decent one. So we headed out there for the day. I didn't quite know what to expect, having never been, but I was pleasantly surprised to see how much was going on at the estate. Brenaissance is actually a Wine and Stud Estate owned and run by Tom and Hayley Breytenbach. The estate boasts everything from wine to wedding venues to accommodation to food to the very distinctive Boran cattle. It truly is a place full of activity and you can easily spend a whole day there.
The restaurant on the estate is called Café Blanc De Noir and it's a really rustic, but chic spot. We opted to sit outside on the patio (see below) as it was a warm, sunny day and the views of the surrounding mountains are really amazing!
The Café makes really delicious pizzas which we'd recommend you try. Their pizzas are very thin and baked in their wood-fired oven, so they are very light and crispy. (Great for when you want to eat a whole pizza but not feel uncomfortably-full!)
Here, you can see the activity inside (see below) in the open-plan kitchen area where the staff are preparing the delicious pizzas.
All of their pizzas look amazing, but I'd recommend the Full House pizza (see below) for R120. I like this option best as it's a combination of four of their pizzas, so you get to have a little taste of everything. (This pizza comes with the wine pairing option, but you can order it just as is if you just want a pizza.)
It's made up of the following four pizzas:
- Biltong : sweet fig, feta, avo, rocket, balsamic glaze
- Cajun Chicken: chorizo, red onion, mushrooms, rocket and chili infused olive oil
- Parma Ham: garlic rosa tomatoes, avo, rocket, parmesan shavings, and pesto olive oil
- Caramelized Onion: kalamata olives, feta, rocket and balsamic glaze
All of these pizzas are equally yummy so it's hard to choose the best one, but I'd go with the Parma Ham pizza. The pesto olive oil was delicious and I loved the thin Parmesan shavings! If you like spicy pizzas, the Cajun Chicken is also a great option. And the other two have an added sweet addition of the fig and the caramelized onion which is equally tasty!
As mentioned above, if you want to do the pizza and wine pairing, you get the Full House pizza, and each of the four different slices of pizza is paired with a different wine.
Brenaissance do not make the wines themselves, but their wines have been selected from well-known wineries in the surrounding Stellenbosch area.
The pizza and wine pairing (see below) costs R185 per person and includes the following wines:
- Chardonnay and Parma Ham Pizza
- Sauvignon Blanc and Caramelized Onion Pizza
- Merlot and Biltong and Fig Pizza
- Red Blend (Shiraz based) and Cajun Chicken Pizza
Again, all four pairings were delicious. For the white wines, I preferred the pairing of the Sauvignon Blanc, which is acidic and fruity, with the Caramelized Onion Pizza which is sweet, but with some added savoury flavours from the feta and olives. (Yum!) For the red wines, I loved the Shiraz-based blend (even on it's own) paired with the spicy Cajun Chicken Pizza. The spiciness of the pizza was really brought out by each sip of the red blend wine. (Equally Yum!)
If you're interested in finding out more about their unique wines, you can read up about them here.
We loved this experience! We even took more photos (see below)!
The staff are friendly and also knowledgeable about the wines. We had a great time! If you have kids, I'd recommend booking a table outside on the grass as there is lots of space for the kids to play (jungle gyms too).
If you're not into pizza, or you are trying for that summer figure, the Café also makes yummy-looking salads full of the fresh ingredients that go on their pizzas. They also do craft beers and sweet treats.
Pretty cool spot! Give them a visit!
