We recently went back to the Constantia Wine Route for another visit and popped in at the beautiful Silvermist Organic Wine Estate. I had never been before and was really surprised to find out that it is an organic wine estate. It houses the only organically certified vineyards in Constantia and no chemicals, pesticides or fertilizers are used in the making of the wines.
The Silvermist estate was established in 1984, making it relatively young in comparison to some of the other Constantia farms. Originally, they farmed timber and olives, but began tranforming into a wine farm in the year 2000. In 2010, the first wines were bottled and the estate now proudly produces three cultivars: Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Upon our arrival, we met our friend and local tour guide, Jared, who introduced us to Gregory Louw. Gregory is your typical "jack of all trades" - the director, wine-maker and viticulturist, but also so much more behind the scenes. He took us in his car right up to the top of the stunning estate and we were blown away by how high up it goes and how much you can see. Gregory showed us the really cool zip-line (see below) and is excited to introduce it to people soon.
After our tour of the estate, we returned back to the wine tasting area (see below). Although you can taste the wines in this room, we were a larger group and the weather was really nice, so we sat outside for our tasting.
We tasted the estate's 100% Sauvignon Blanc from 2015 (see below) and I was pleasantly surprised. It smells like white peach, citrus blossom, passion fruit and a hint of green pepper.
It didn't taste like the typical grassy Sauvignon Blancs that I'm used to - it had delicious flavours of lime, lemon and melon. It was really complex and also quite special as it is produced in generally smaller quantities.
On the top of each bottle, and also on the lable itself, is an outline of Rocket. She is Gregory's faithful companion and loyal friend. (She even has her own wine, named the Rocketdog Red!) I think this added personal touch to each bottle makes the wines that much more special.
And, obviously, we had to take some cool photographs of us while we were there! 🙂
The vines in the background were absolutely beautiful.
We were sitting on the grass patch, facing the vineyards, and in front of the Green Vine Eatery. This restaurant is really quite a hidden gem (yes, really). It forms part of the family heritage and is owned and managed by Chessa Louw.
The eatery has a very varied menu. They make their dishes using the freshest ingredients and they take pride in keeping the menu vegan and vegetarian friendly. You can check out their menu here.
We were spoilt and received this yummy platter from the eatery (see below). The fresh farm bread was delicious. They have three platters to choose from on their menu - I think this wasn't a menu item as such - but their typical Farmer's Meat Board costs R200. It includes Free Range Charcuterie Meats, Gourmet Cheeses, House made Preserves, Fresh Bread and Pesto.
You can tell that we had a lot of fun with this platter 🙂 There are few things that are better than cheese and wine!
We had such an awesome time at Silvermist! We even had a photoshoot on the couch. (As a side note, I do sometimes wonder what the regular guests think of us! "Who are these weird people holding their cheese platters up to the vineyards and posing precariously on the edge of a couch with their wine glass?" But - it's all part of the "job", you see...)
Just sitting randomly on a couch in the vineyards in Constantia....
As you can see, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves! Thanks so much to Jared for organising it all and to Gregory for hosting us!
You, too, can (and should) visit Silvermist, but the wine tasting area is currently closed for renovations. They are re-opening on the 1st October 2018. The Green Vine Eatery is open from Monday to Sunday from 8:00am to 5:00pm.
