Living so close to the Stellenbosch Wine Route, it's just so easy to pop round for an afternoon of wine tasting, whilst nibbling on a cheese platter. We decided to visit Uva Mira Mountain Vineyards, as we'd been there before, and loved the view (and also the Chardonnay).
The name of the wine estate means "The Wonderful Grape", as Uva is the Latin word for Grape and Mira means Wonderful. The vineyard is unusual in that it is 620 metres above sea level, which makes for quite unique wines. The wines are also made only from the grapes produced from their own vines (see below).
Due to the fact that the vineyard is so high above sea level, the views are just incredible (see below) and you have a stunning view of False Bay and Table Bay
The Standard Wine Tasting costs R30 to taste 3 wines. We opted for the Mira Tasting though, as it includes their range of Mira wines. This tasting costs R85 for 5 wines. It is a bit pricey, but the wines are really good (and the bottles themselves are quite pricey if you had to buy one). We were served by Janine, who was really great at her job! She was very friendly and very knowledgeable about the wines. What I liked most about her was that you could see she was passionate about her job, and this really makes you enjoy your experience that much more.
The 5 wines we got were:
- The 2016 Mira Sauvignon Blanc R150 per bottle
- The 2015 Mira Chardonnay R180 per bottle
- The 2014 Mira Merlot R195 per bottle
- The 2014 Mira Cabernet Sauvignon R195 per bottle
- The 2015 Mira Shiraz R210 per bottle
I particularly enjoyed the Chardonnay and the Shiraz. I don't normally like Chardonnays because I'm not a fan of the very woody taste, but this one is gently-oaked having spent just 9 months in 30% new oak.
We decided to order a cheese platter with our tasting (see below). You can get a Cheese Platter or a Meat Platter for R225, or a comination of both for R250. We didn't know about the combination one (which looked amazing), so we ordered the plain cheese platter. It was really great! Although it's pricey, it was more than enough for two of us. It is served with freshly-baked bread, which you could smell when you walked in. And the olives were delicious!
If you can, try to get a window seat for your wine tasting, so that you can have this stunning view (see below). If the weather is nice, you can also sit on the balcony outside, which has an equally stunning view. However, on the day we went, it felt like it was 50 degrees outside, so we opted for the cooler inside (with an aircon).
OVERALL RATING (Based on a wine tasting experience): 86%
Food: 80% - The cheese and meat platters were really great, served with freshly-baked bread. Good portions of good quality cheeses. (Bear in mind that some wine tasting venues do not offer any snacks)
Wine Selection: 90% - The Mira wine tasting experience enabled you to sample their range of wines, which showed off the estate well.
Service: 85% - Although the service we received from Janine was truly amazing, she was rushed off her feet, and we sometimes had to wait quite a while to receive our next tasting. I'd suggest more staff on weekends.
Ambiance: 90% - Wow! What incredible views from that place. It doesn't really get much better.
Would I go back? Yes, and I'd like to try the combination cheese and meat platter. (And sit outside)
