Guys, I am super excited about this new page of mine! 🙂 This Grapevine page is going to be my new project – a place where I can write what I want to and say what I think. Don’t get me wrong – I love my blogging pages too – but THIS page is more a bit more of ME and a bit more technical about WINE.
As you may know, I am currently studying wine through WSET. I recently completed my Level 2 through the International Wine Education Centre and was lucky enough to be taught (mostly) by Cathy Marston – someone who gets you excited to learn about wine. I’m currently studying towards Level 3 and it is VERY challenging. Don’t ever let people tell you this is easy! With a large focus on the academic side of wine, you navigate your way through the premium wine countries of the world, while learning about winemaking, vineyard management and the effects of climate on the wines (among many, many other things). You also get to taste some of these international wines, which is essential in learning about wine and how our wines here in South Africa compare to those made elsewhere.
But it’s not all about the education – I am also trying to LIVE through this EXPERIENCE. As you may know, the last two years of my life have changed me completely – losing my mom to cancer and years of infertility treatment change your perspective on life, as clichéd as that may sound. So now here I am. I took a risk to leave my teaching job and dive (pretty cluelessly) into the world of wine. But I am determined to learn and grow in this ever-changing new journey.
Hence, this page. In this space, I’m uncovering a wine a month that is unusual – either to me or to South Africa. But I’m also going to write about wine, as I learn things myself 🙂 This way, I get to combine my love of teaching with my even greater love of wine! 🙂
I most certainly do not claim to know everything. In fact, I know very little of what there is to know out there. But I am keen and I am learning and I believe that is what counts. I will be sharing many of my hits and misses with you too – one big miss being that I am AWFUL at picking up tannins in wine 🙂 (I’m still trying to get it right!)
So, please join me as I fill up each wine glass along this wine adventure of mine… 🙂 Cheers!
